Amerst Cinema Offers Free Sampler of Three Films

One … two … FREE!  Beginning on March 25, Amherst Cinema will offer moviegoers a “series sampler” of three films reflecting the diverse range of programming offered by the Cinema through its Restoration & Rediscoveries, Cinema Seminars, and Bellwether series. All shows are currently on sale.

Monday, March 25 at 7:00 p.m. Free to Amherst Cinema Members.FINDING CHRISTA Directed by Camille Billops | NR | 59 mins. | 1991 SYNOPSIS: New 2K restoration. This startlingly personal documentary explores the feelings surrounding the reunion between filmmaker Camille Billops and her own daughter, 20 years after she was given up for adoption. Introduction and talkback with Daphne Lamothe, Professor of Africana Studies at Smith College.This film is part of our Restorations & Rediscoveries series, which showcases films from the past and makes them new again through recent restorations.

  • Wednesday, March 27 at 7:00 p.m.: Free and open to the public; tickets available only at the Box Office. Cinema Seminar: “Filmmaking in Times of War” ROCK.PAPER.GRENADE | Directed by Iryna Tsilyk | NR | 92 mins | Ukrainian w/subs | 2022 SYNOPSIS: ROCK.PAPER.GRENADE tells the story of a young boy growing up in a shaky, post-Soviet Ukraine, who, looking for a mentor, befriends an Afghan war veteran. After the film, prominent Ukrainian intellectuals, award-winning filmmaker Iryna Tsilyk and Ivan Kozlenko, Amherst College visiting researcher and eminent former director of the Dovzhenko Center in Kyiv, will discuss working across modes of documentary, feature film, and animation, and adapting literary works to the screen.This film program is part of our Cinema Seminars series, which invites audiences to take a deep dive into new and familiar film worlds. Designed as a communal and conversational experience, Cinema Seminars offer participants the opportunity to thoughtfully explore, engage and foster new understandings of the film form within historical and cultural contexts. Each seminar includes a talk and a film screening.

    AMERICAN GLASS FACTORY Directed by Jason Fox | 55 mins. | 2023 SYNOPSIS: What does the U.S. Democratic Party share with observational documentary? The promise and the problem of transparency. In a live performance from the forthcoming audio series “Trust Issues,” Jason Fox explores the sixty-year long relationship between Direct Cinema and Democratic Party politics. Director Jason Fox joins us in person to perform AMERICAN GLASS FACTORY, and for a post-screening conversation.This film is part of our Bellwether: New Directions in Cinema series, which celebrates fresh approaches to fiction, non-fiction and experimental cinema. The series showcases striking and important new films and engages artists and filmgoers in discussion.
