The Public Shade Tree Committee invites volunteers of all ages to join them at Crocker Farm Elementary School on Saturday September 14 from 9AM to Noon for their fifth public tree planting of the year. State Representative Mindy Domb will be present. Participants are encouraged to wear clothing suitable for digging and comfortable shoes. Gloves may be helpful.

The town began a campaign in 2013 to plant 2000 shade trees along town roads.Ā  In 2013, 325 trees were planted. In 2014 another 600 went in. The total at the end of 2015 was 1100.Ā  Figures for 2016, 2017 and 2018 were not available at this writing.

This year, the committee sponsored plantings at Longmeadow Drive, Colonial Village, Amherst Schools, and Whippletree Lane. The final public planting of the year will be held on October 19 at a location to be determined.Ā

The committee plants a mix of trees which in the past has included oaks, tulip, poplars, crab apples and Turkish tree hazels.  The selection depends on the site, the soil and the desires of the local residents and the final determination is made together by the tree warden and the committee in consultation with the neighbors.
More information about the Public Shade Tree Committee can be found here and about their scheduled plantings here.
