District Removes Racist Graffiti From Sidewalk Outside Amherst Regional High School, Officials Now Investigating Its Source

Editor’s Note: Below is an email sent to the Amherst Regional Public Schools community by Superintendent Michael Morris on Dec. 14, which was signed by several district officials.

Dear ARPS Community:

Last Friday afternoon, racist and anti-Semitic graffiti was found on the sidewalk outside Amherst Regional High School.  These chalk drawings, which included a racial slur and a swastika, were photographed and quickly removed; however, the drawings were a blatant violation of school policy, and more importantly our community’s core values. No one should ever have to come to work or school and experience discrimination and bigotry in any form. Since the incident occurred, we have been using the tools available to the District to investigate the incident and to identify the person, or persons, who committed this hateful act of vandalism, and have been in communication with the Amherst Police Department about this illegal act.

The graffiti left outside ARHS comes at a time when there is a disturbing escalation in incidents of bias, bigotry and hatred within our country and throughout the world.  It is a clear reminder of why we are unequivocal about doing work to make our school community an actively anti-racist institution. In recent years, our schools have engaged in anti-racist educational programming, for both students and staff, designed to broaden perspectives and create greater cultural awareness. We are fully committed to continuing this work as, clearly, we still have much to do when it comes to embodying a fully inclusive, hate-free, and understanding community.  

Understanding that the information about this incident is of great concern and many will have strong feelings about it, counselors are available for students who want to discuss their thoughts and feelings.  The district also acknowledges that this will impact personnel as well and will be planning and offering opportunities for follow up for staff as well.  Further information will be forthcoming.

Estimada Comunidad de ARPS:

El pasado viernes por la tarde, se encontraron grafitis racistas y antisemitas en la acera de la Escuela Superior Regional Amherst.  Estos dibujos de tiza, que incluían una difamación racial y una esvástica, fueron fotografiados y rápidamente retirados; sin embargo, los dibujos eran una flagrante violación de la política de la escuela, y más importante aún, de los valores fundamentales de nuestra comunidad. Nadie debería tener que venir al trabajo o a la escuela y experimentar discriminación e intolerancia en ninguna forma. Desde que ocurrió el incidente, hemos estado usando las herramientas disponibles en el Distrito para tratar de investigar el incidente e identificar a la persona o personas que cometieron este odioso acto de vandalismo, y hemos estado en comunicación con el Departamento de Policía de Amherst sobre este acto ilegal.

El graffiti dejado fuera de ARHS llega en un momento en el que hay una inquietante intensificación de incidentes de prejuicios, intolerancia y odio dentro de nuestro país y en todo el mundo.  Es un claro recordatorio de por qué somos inequívocos en el trabajo de hacer de nuestra comunidad escolar una institución activamente antirracista. En los últimos años, nuestras escuelas se han comprometido en programas educativos antirracistas, tanto para los esttudiantes como para el personal, diseñados para ampliar las perspectivas y crear una mayor conciencia cultural. Estamos totalmente comprometidos a continuar este trabajo ya que, claramente, todavía tenemos mucho que hacer cuando se trata de encarnar una comunidad totalmente inclusiva, libre de odio y comprensiva.  

Entendiendo que la información sobre este incidente es de gran preocupación y que muchos tendrán fuertes sentimientos al respecto, los consejeros están disponibles para los estudiantes que quieran discutir sus pensamientos y sentimientos.  El distrito también reconoce que esto también afectará al personal y estará planificando y ofreciendo oportunidades de seguimiento para el personal también.  Próximamente se ofrecerá más información.
