State Representative Mindy Domb interviewed the Co-leaders of Generation Ratify Amherst, Marisol Pierce Bonifaz of Amherst and Edy Savage of Northampton on February 1. That interview can be viewed here.  Generation Ratify National was founded in 2019 to promote passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. The Amherst chapter was founded in May of 2020. It currently has members from all over the Pioneer Valley ranging in age from 12 to 18.

The local chapter sponsored a banner drop in Northampton in memory of Ruth Bader Ginsberg on October 24   displaying a banner saying “May RBG’s Memory Be a Revolution: Enact the Equal Rights Amendment”. They also held a voter promotion drive last fall.

Pierce Bonifaz and Savage said that many of their generation do not realize there is nothing in the Constitution that says all people are equal regardless of gender. Passing the ERA would set a clear standard against discrimination on the basis of gender.  They said that even though they can’t vote, they have a voice. Laws being enacted now will affect us, and soon “ it will be our world”.

Both found it gratifying to inspire other young people to become active for a cause and seeing them blossom as they gain confidence. They said that adults can support them by listening to them and helping them find resources, as well as helping them publicize their efforts.

Pierce Bonifaz was inspired to fight for passage of the ERA after listening to the Kavanaugh hearings at age 12. She was upset that one man’s word was worth more than those of a thousand women. She is hopeful that the ERA will be ratified this year. For her generation,  it is not a controversial matter.

Savage and Pierce Bonifaz recommended some films that the local group has watched together as a basis for discussion. They are Knock Down the House, And She Could Be Next, and On the Basis of Sex.
