The Town of Amherst will hold the town’s first Lunar New Year celebration on Tuesday, February 9 from 5:30-6:30 PM on Zoom. Those who attend can learn the history of the Lunar New Year (also known as the Spring Festival) and the customs and traditions that represent this traditional family celebration. The Town’s virtual celebration will include:

  • Reading of the Town’s First Lunar New Year Proclamation
  • Story telling by Lily Soh, Ministry Pastor First Baptist Church Chinese Ministry.
  • A traditional instrumental medley played for the Lunar New Year performed by Ariel Loh, Member of the First Baptist Church Chinese Ministry.

Although the solar Gregorian calendar is in common and legal use in most countries, traditional lunar and lunisolar calendars continue to be used throughout the world to determine religious festivals and national holidays including Rosh Hashanah, the Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Mongolian New Years, Vesak/Buddha’s Birthday, and Ramadan (Islamic calendar).
