Reuse/Recycling Rally In Northampton, July 31

The city of Northampton with the assistance of Northampton ReUse will  hold a reuse and recycling rally on Saturday, July 31 at Smith Vocational High School from 9 a.m. to Noon, providing an opportunity for people to divert a variety of specific items from the waste stream.

Here’s What They Are Collecting On July 31

Clothing & Textiles

A Salvation Army truck will be on-site to collect clothing for reuse and recycling.

Accepted: All clean, dry, and odor-free clothing, shoes and accessories, curtains, linens, blankets, and stuffed animals will be accepted. This includes clean and dry worn, torn and stained items. 
Not accepted: wet, damp, or smelly clothing, curtains, linens, blankets, and stuffed animals.

Secure Documents in Need of Shredding

Friends of the Northampton Senior Center is sponsoring a ProShred mobile shredding unit as a fundraiser for the Senior Center’s lobby renovation project. A fee of $10 (for a paper- ream-sized box) or $15 (for a trash bag or 2 foot file box) will be charged.

Select Durable Medical Equipment
The REquipment, Durable Medical Equipment Reuse Program of Boston will be on-site to collect specific types of durable medical equipment. REquipment inspects, & refurbishes equipment & provides it free of charge to those in ned via their website.

Accepted: Tub seats, shower chairs, standers, adapted strollers, rollator style walkers, scooters, power & manual wheelchairs, positioning & seating devices, sling lifts, & portable ramps.

Not Accepted: Crutches, canes, walkers, commodes, hospital beds, & c or bi-pap machines.

Rigid, White Expanded Polystyrene (Popularly known as “Styrofoam” or EPS)

The Northampton Kiwanis Club will collect Styrofoam for a $5.00 per carload disposal fee.

Accepted: Large pieces of clean, dry, rigid white EPS with no attached paper or plastic.
Not accepted: Colored or food-related foam (contamination risks) and packing peanuts, soft foam.

Bicycles & Bicycle Parts

Bikes not Bombs will be on-site to collect all varieties of two- wheeled bicycles, bicycle parts, tools and accessories in good condition. They request a $20 donation to offset refurbishing and shipping expenses.

Accepted: All varieties of two-wheeled bicycles (some broken pieces OK), bicycle parts, tools and accessories (e.g. helmets,

Not accepted: Weather beaten or rusted bicycles, kick-scooters, motorized & exercise bikes, tricycles.

Select Bulky Rigid Plastic

Accepted: Rigid plastic crates, bins, buckets, baskets, totes and lawn furniture. Please consult this document to clarify which items are now accepted

Not Accepted: Anything made of plastic that is not a crate, bin, bucket, basket, tote or piece of lawn furniture, and acceptable items that have held hazardous material.

Seed, Grain, & Feed Bags

Accepted: Empty, clean, dry, woven plastic animal feed, bird seed, and grain bags.

Not accepted: Wood stove pellet fuel bags, dirty and/or wet woven bags, or any form of bag that is not made of woven plastic.

Important Guidelines

Plan to arrive no later than 11:45 AM to allow time to unload your material.

Please note: Styrofoam collection will end at 11AM.

We can accept only items that meet specific criteria. Carefully review the guidelines below to understand which types of material to bring. If we are not able to accept some of your material, please be prepared to take it back home with you.

The Rally can get crowded. Please be patient if lines form, and drive slowly and carefully until you exit the school campus.
