The League of Women Voters Amherst was founded in 1939 and has held a luncheon every year on the Saturday closest to February 14 to celebrate its anniversary. These luncheons used to be in person with a speaker, but last February the event moved to Zoom. U.S. Rep. James McGovern was the guest speaker and spoke from Cape Cod about the January 6 debacle. This year, the League will once again hold its birthday “luncheon” on Zoom. Professor Carrie Baker from Smith College will speak on her area of expertise: reproductive rights. Baker teaches courses on gender, law and public policy, feminist social movements, reproductive justice, and feminist public writing. The virtual luncheon is planned for February 12, at 12:30 p.m.. People can join the event by registering in advance here. Registration is required for this event.
National Birthday Event
This year, the League of Women Voters celebrates its 102nd birthday. The organization is celebrating with a day of voter empowerment across the US, starting with a virtual pep rally on February 14th at 11a.m. ET. With midterm elections less than a month away, there’s no better time to take pro-voter action.
