The ETI was formed in 2019 to promote a sustainable and equitable transition to a decarbonized energy system based on interdisciplinary research. It is one of the few organizations that considers both the scientific and social justice aspects to climate change mitigation. Panelists at the launch program include engineering professor and ETI director Erin Baker; Danielle Deane-Ryan of Bezos Earth Fund; Elvis Mendez, director of Neighbor to Neighbor; Amilcar Shabazz, professor of African American Studies; and Cielo Sharkus, PhD candidate in environmental and water resources engineering. Senator Ed Markey and Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy will also speak at the event.
The launch event is sponsored by the School of Public Policy, the Wind Energy Center, Institute for Social Science Research, and the departments of Anthropology, Civil & Environmental Engineering, and Economics. As per UMass policy, all attendees at the in-person event must show proof of Covid-19 vaccination or a negative Covid test within the previous 72 hours. Masks are required indoors regardless of vaccination status.
