Applications Now Available For Affordable Studio Apartments On Northampton Road
Applications are now available for 28, newly constructed affordable studio apartments at East Gables on 132 Northampton Road in Amherst. Construction is anticipated to be completed in July 2023 and apartments will be available for occupancy in early fall 2023. East Gables homes include off street parking, connecting walkways, covered bike storage area, on site laundry, elevator and universal access, and 24 hour emergency maintenance. The building is smoke free. Hearing, mobility, and visually impaired units are available. Section 8 and other subsidies are welcome. Information sessions for this development will be held at the Jones Library on Wednesday May 10, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday May 20 from 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m..
There will be a lottery in June 21, 2023 to allocate the units.

Project Was A Long Time In The Making
The project was first proposed in 2017. The town approved funding for the project in 2019, A series of public hearings revealed vocal opposition and strong support within the host neighborhood. The first public forum on the project was held in September 2019 (see also here) and public deliberations continued through October of 2020. Permitting was approved in November of 2020 and construction began in March 2022.
