APEA Supports New Elementary School

The Amherst Pelham Education Association (APEA) issued a statement on April 26, endorsing a Yes vote on the new elementary school. The union had previously suggested that voters hold off on supporting the debt exclusion vote slated for May 2, until the town reached a contract settlement with the union. APEA stated at that time that they were taking no position on the debt exclusion vote itself. The union has been in negotiations with the regional school committee for over 15 months.
The union’s April 26 statement follows:
The APEA (Amherst Pelham Education Association) supports full funding for education in Amherst, including fair and equitable wages for staff, full staffing that meets the educational needs of our students, and safe and healthy buildings. The APEA believes that every student and educator is entitled to work and learn in a safe and healthy school that is equipped for teaching and learning in the 21st Century. The APEA supports the building of a new elementary school in Amherst, and encourages the community to vote on May 2.
