Opening Reception For Three Fall Exhibitions At UMass Museum Of Contemporary Art

The UMass Museum of Contemporary Art will host opening receptions for three new exhibits on Thursday, September 21, 2023. from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. The events are free and open to the public. The exhibitions are described below. More information can be found at the event website.

The Exhibitions

Displaced: Raida Adon’s Strangeness
EXHIBITION: September 22 – December 10, 2023
OPENING RECEPTION: September 21, 5-7 p.m.

The large-scale video installation Strangeness invokes experiences of displacement as well as enduring journeys in search of Home. Interweaving archetypal, historical, and biographical threads, Strangeness creates riveting audiovisual fabrics, which reflect human fragility and resilience, agony, and hope.

Susan Yard Harris: Dialogue with a Collection
EXHIBITION: September 22 – December 10, 2023
OPENING RECEPTION: September 21, 5-7 p.m.

This exhibition is part of an ongoing exhibition series at the UMCA, where local artists display their work along with selections from the museum’s permanent collection of more than 3,800 contemporary prints, drawings, and photographs. This year, local artist Susan Yard Harris’ drawings are presented alongside Edda Renouf prints from the UMCA’s collection.


Artists, Born Elsewhere — Selections from the UMCA’s Permanent Collection
EXHIBITION: September 22 – December 10, 2023
OPENING RECEPTION: September 21, 5-7 p.m.

This exhibition features works from the UMCA’s permanent collection by artists who immigrated to the U.S. and have had a lasting impact on American culture, including Marina Abramović, Josef Albers, Vija Celmins, André Kertész, and Julie Mehretu, among others.
