In response to the Supreme Court’s ruling on Affirmative Action, members of the UMass Amherst community are invited to come together for “Understanding the End of Affirmative Action in College Admissions,” a panel and discussion event on October 23 at noon in the Campus Center Hadley Room, 10th floor.

The panel will unite experts on racial justice, higher education, constitutional law and law and society to explore the legal, practical and symbolic meanings of the decision. The discussion will be in the form of a roundtable, giving students, faculty and staff an opportunity to ask questions.

“Our entire university community is affected by the recent Supreme Court decision that further limits the consideration of race in college admissions” says Jamie Rowen, director of the Center for Justice, Law and Societies and panel moderator. “We hope this event offers an opportunity for reflection and learning for students, faculty and staff.”

Panelists will include Erin Bernard, interim director of first-year admissions; Princess Garrett, doctoral student in social justice education; Felicia Griffin-Fennell, director of the Social and Behavioral Sciences Rise Program and lecturer in sociology; and Rebecca Hamlin, professor of political science and legal studies and director of the Legal Studies Program

The event is sponsored by the International Programs Office, the Center for Justice, Law and Societies, the Legal Studies Program and the Office of Equity and Inclusion.  A buffet lunch will be offered, and registration is not required.
