DEFINING SPACE displays abstract paintings by Karen Iglehart and loosely interpreted New England landscapes by Janet W. Winston. Iglehart’s abstract paintings represent her recent explorations about space and form. She relies primarily on color, not perspective, to create a visual sense of space within the picture plane. With these works, she moves from an emphasis on horizontal to vertical form. She also seeks to define relationships among different forms in space through color or placement on the canvas. All the paintings are oil on canvas, and some also include graphite markings.

Winston’s new series interprets local landscapes in a painterly manner using oil and watercolor. She often depicts distance receding into the background, and brings the viewer into the foreground with a deftly employed detail or a dab of bright hue. An overall atmosphere encircles the whole composition, with the blending and choice of colors. The artist’s love of nature often inspires her work, to include birds, flowers, and butterflies.

ABOUT GALLERY A3
Gallery A3 is a contemporary, fine art gallery in the Cinema Complex in downtown Amherst, Massachusetts. Members of the artist-run cooperative include painters, sculptors, photographers, printmakers, and mixed media artists.

Gallery A3 was founded in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on 9/11. A group of local artists believed art to be essential to the health and healing of a community and began the gallery as a place to share ideas and artistic support. Since that time, the gallery has been home to over 60 artists and is now celebrating 21 years of monthly shows with openings and forums, all free and open to the public, and an annual juried show that supports regional artists.
