Girls Middle School Track Team Wins State Championship

Amherst Regional Middle School girls won the Division 3 State Championship at the 12th Annual State Middle School Track and Field Championships on 6/1/24 at Clinton High School, sharing the title with Thomas Prince School of Princeton. Both schools scored 64 points. Innovation Academy Charter School of Tyngsboro finished third. Read full girls results here.

Amherst placed first in a single event, with the 4 x 800m relay team (Genevieve Dole, Maeve Cunningham, Marit MacDonald, and Nora Hanna) winning in a time of 11:12:01, 17 seconds ahead of runner up Lennox.

Top individual finisher on the girls side was Tansy Warwick who finished second in the long jump with a personal best (PB) of 15’5″ and a second place in the high jump with a leap of 5′, also a personal best.

Claire Fortin, Juliana Albo, Maggie Reilly-Hogan and Tansy Warwick, 2nd place, 4 x 100m relay: 53.91

Nora Hanna, 8th place, 800m, 2:38.08 (PB)

Amherst Boys Place 13th
The Amherst Boys team placed 13th with 17 points across four events. Millis Junior Senior High School of Millis, MA won the Division 3 Boys Championship. Narragansett and Boston’s Catholic Memorial were 2nd and 3rd respectively. Read full boys results here.

Wes Dunford won an individual championship for Amherst, winning the high jump with a leap of 5’4″. He also placed 7th in the javlin with a throw of 114′

Ellis Heaphy DeLeon, Nicholas Workman, Stuart Miller, and Wes Dunford, 5th place, 4 x400m relay, 4:09.

  1. These middle school athletes achieved this incredible level of success despite having a running track in such poor condition that Amherst hasn’t been able to host a home meet in years. Imagine what they might achieve when they get to practice and compete on a brand new running track! (Coming fall 2025, all going well)
