The Amherst Pelham Education Association honors Juneteeth with a restatement of its commitment to anti-racism — in our classrooms, in our schools, in our community.

We call on the Amherst-Pelham School District to also recommit itself to anti-racism. In response to incidents of micro-aggressions and discrimination experienced by our staff of color this year. On February 13, 2024 the APEA issued a Call to Action to the District for re-instituting anti-racist work

The APEA asked for the district to provide:

  • targeted anti-bias training for staff, administrators, and students who need support in understanding and skills to create an equitable school environment for all,
  • ongoing anti-racism work in each of the schools,
  • an acknowledgement that this work is something that needs to be undertaken on a daily basis as we each challenge ourselves to disrupt white supremacy culture,
  • hiring a director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to lead the district in this work.

In the past, the district required anti-racism professional development to new hires, ongoing professional development for staff and curriculum and support for students to interrupt bias. We have confidence that the district can recommit to our anti-racist mission.
