Traffic will also be a big mess because of a big road project just east of Cumberland Farms on Belchertown Rd/Rt 9. This project has resulted in over a week of heavy traffic, including many big trucks, being detoured down Stanley St., which is very narrow and usually has a lot of foot and bike traffic. Instead, cars and heavy trucks race down our street at high speed, putting pedestrians, our farmers, and bikers at high risk. And there has been no police presence on our street to ticket these speeders! Will traffic still be detoured down Stanley St as students start arriving — since it is clear the road project is not anywhere near being completed? (probably, I suspect, but very upsetting as our street will thus remain unsafe for an entire neighborhood without police slowing down the traffic.) Or will the project be delayed til next summer? (unlikely, right!)
It’s very upsetting the town gave no advance warning to residents of Stanley St and the Misty Meadows neighborhood before detouring literally hundreds of cars down our our street for more than a week now.
Traffic flow is best met — and safest for all — by having the traffic stay on on Rt 9/Belchertown Rd., not detoured down a little side street for days on end. The detour should end right away, especially with the added traffic of schools/universities starting up soon.
