  1. This article

    https://grist.org/food/should-colleges-treat-their-students-to-fine-dining-or-financial-aid/

is a little old but it poses some good questions: how do colleges and universities prioritize their use of resources and, is there a trade-off between these on-campus lifestyle improvements and the institution’s commitment to equity? I’m not a huge fan of Malcom Gladwell’s work, but I like the way the Grist author handles it here: “There’s no need for asceticism, it’s over-the-top luxury that’s unseemly.” Overall, evidence suggests there’s an inverse relationship between on-campus luxuries and affordability. I think we can fairly criticize our local schools for participating in a system which, “…results in the middle and upper classes getting their perks, while the working class gets bilked.”

  2. I’m very proud of UMass for prioritizing local, organic, sustainable food, climate solutions and zero waste. Not only does UMass dining let students choose climate friendly food options and a plant based diet, but they use local food and products, provide organic options, minimize waste and even use green cleaning methods to keep the place clean. https://umassdining.com/sustainability. That’s not “fine dining”. No silverware or linen tablecloths. It is sustainable dining that I’m sure benefits student lives and academics across the board. It’s the students who voted to make UMass #1.
