Photos of the Week: Farewell to Stream Ice by Annique Boomsma and John Root

Farewell to stream ice #1. Photo: Annique Boomsma
Spring is here and stream ice will soon be gone. In the photos below, Annique Boomsma and John Root capture glimpses of winter’s last local stream ice formations.

Our feature, Photo of the Week, presents each week, a new picture by a local photographer. We invite local photographers to share their photographs here. Please include a description/caption and an indication of who is to be credited.
The ice shapes formed are manifold, depending on both the global ambient conditions (like stream geometry and geology, vegetation in or near the stream…) and on the nanoscopic features (like molecular structure of water, its dissolved gases, minerals…), but when I first saw these beautiful images, I also wondered about the role of each photographer’s “eye” (aesthetic sensibility) in what we see here.
Here’s thought experiment to test this: if these 10 images were printed on a deck of cards and the deck were shuffle, would we be able to distinguish the AB cards from the JR cards?
Ommmmmmmmmmmmmmm….
