The following letter was sent to the Amherst Planning Board on March 19, 2025.

I am writing you to encourage the redesign of the three proposed mixed use buildings at Atkins Corner. While this is a good area for increased commercial and residential diversity to create a thriving village center, the look of the three buildings is a bit of a letdown. Preference surveys of town residents show over and over that residents support buildings with more traditional New England architecture, buildings of brick and clapboard and those with variations in colors, facades, with more details at the roofline, peaked and mansard roofs, awnings, windows with more detailing and changes in pane size.

I like well designed, interesting modern buildings, like the Eric Carle, that offer something interesting to see and think about.  Three similar boxy buildings with the same dark colors and monotonous features simply don’t contribute to an attractive, welcoming village center that will draw people in. People will support increased density and greater height if the buildings look good and are visually interesting. I recommend that each building look have a different design to avoid monotony and have more details and changes in color, rooflines, windows, facade materials, storefronts, etc.  Brighter colors add interest and positivity.  The three buildings need a better integration and visual connection to the buildings nearby.  I also suggest the addition of balconies, awnings, perhaps rooftop decks — as well as outside places for people to sit and for kids to play.  Perhaps a tot lot, some basketball hoops? Also sidewalks need to be wide enough for a dedicated bike lane, as this section of West Bay Road is quite dangerous.

As the project proponents are seeking additional heights, I suggest the Planning Board require more from them in terms of design and amenities. I think this will benefit everyone.
