Gallery A3 at 28 Amity Street announces a new exhibit: Pay Attention: Photographs from Provence and Paris by Larry Rankin. The exhibit will run from September 2, 2021 to October 2, 2021 with a limited space opening reception on September 2 from 5-8 p.m and an art forum (register here) on Thursday September 23 at 7:30 p.m. Gallery A3 is open Thursday through Sunday from 5:00-8:00 p.m.
Rankin describes his preferred approach to making photographic images as “contemplative” and “unhurried”, and acknowledges that travel photography often does not lend itself to such a leisurely, thoughtful ideal. “Too many places to see and schedules to keep,” he admits. So how did he resolve this dilemma on a long-anticipated trip to Provence and Paris? He found essential inspiration (as well as his exhibition title “…Pay attention…”) from a poem by Mary Oliver.
Instructions for living a life:
Pay attention
Be astonished
Tell about it
The photographs in “…Pay attention…” highlight his efforts to go beyond traditional travel snapshots and ubiquitous selfies, by seeking otherwise unnoticed details and unusual perspectives, and by working deliberately with textures, shapes and relationships, colors and tonal variations, chance portraits, and expressive moments.
In an art forum on Thursday, September 23 at 7:30 pm, Larry will welcome viewers into his artistic process and illustrate his image selection and post-capture editing decisions for several works in the exhibit. He will also invite the audience to share their experiences of “paying attention” in their own artistic efforts while traveling.
See the gallery website (www.gallerya3.com) to register for this online event, which is free and open to the public. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Amherst Cultural Council, a local agency, which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
