The Town of Amherst will commemorate the historic Tibetan Uprising on March 10. This day is an expression of solidarity for the Tibetan Peoples in exile across the world.  The Amherst event includes the raising of the Tibetan flag on Town Hall, the reading of a proclamation by the Town Council, and a march from Amherst to Northampton along Route 9 and concluding in Easthampton.

President of the Regional Tibetan Association of Massachusetts, Mr. Tsultrem Kunsang, explains, “On March 10, 2024, Tibetans around the world will solemnly observe the 65th anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising against the occupation of Tibet by the People’s Republic of China, a stance against what is widely regarded as a brutal and illegitimate annexation. The Regional Tibetan Association of Massachusetts based in Amherst, will honor this significant day with a series of events, including the “Walk for Tibet” — a symbolic peace march from Amherst Town to Northampton City and reading of proclamations and the hoisting of the Tibetan National Flag outside the Town Halls of Amherst, Northampton City, and Easthampton City. We urge all individuals globally who cherish human rights, justice, and peace to align with the moral imperative of history, to speak up against the human rights abuses in Tibet, and to support the Tibetan people’s struggle for the fundamental right to live in their own country, free from oppression and discrimination. We call on everyone to stand in solidarity with the Tibetan community.”

The President of the Amherst Town Council, Lynn Griesemer, notes, “We are honored to host this commemorative event and have done so since our change of government in 2018.  It presents a wonderful moment to acknowledge and celebrate the robust contributions of the Tibetan Community in exile throughout the Valley.  We continue to stand with our neighbors and friends to acknowledge the difficult past as we look forward to a better future.”
