Photos of the Week: North Common Nears Completion by the Town of Amherst
Much of Amherst’s North Common project has now been completed. One big change from a traffic perspective is that the section of Boltwood Ave from Main St to Spring St is now a one-way street going south. The southern section of Boltwood Ave from Spring St to College St (Route 9) is still two-way. Also, there are new sidewalks around the north common & main common, & the parking meters have been replaced with pay stations.
Our feature, Photo of the Week, presents each week, a new picture by a local photographer. We invite local photographers to share their photographs here. Please include a description/caption and an indication of who is to be credited.
Since the ValleyBike share program is relaunching this week, I hope that the ValleyBike station at the corner of the Main Street and South Pleasant Street will be reinstalled soon. Located in the center of downtown Amherst, this was always a well-used station for taking out or returning a ValleyBike and also, with the ValleyBike kiosk with the station, for helping people learn about ValleyBike.
A cynic wants to know how long our new park will look new? Let’s hope we have the personnel to maintain it.
I asked about that when the North Common was first approved and was informed that the North Common would not need staff for maintenance. I asked because the Town Manager makes a point of not assigning any additional staff to any new project, including the library expansion project. I’m assuming people are aware that there is no plan to add staff for the Jones Project, including no new staff for maintenance, cleaning or programming for the additional square footage. I guess the bathrooms will be self-cleaning.
Nick Black Sheep must be thrilled with the additional parking generated by the north common project…..sarcasm intended
