Winter Public Health Updates: Immunization Clinic Set for February 5
With more people staying inside during cold weather, the seasonal uptick in respiratory viruses has arrived. There is still time to receive the seasonal flu vaccine and the updated COVID-19 vaccine. The Amherst Department of Public Health is holding an immunization clinic for those 6 months and older on Wednesday, February from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Bang’s Center, Room 101. Registration is recommended.
Wastewater surveillance for COVID-19 on January 14 showed a prevalence of 1,857,929 copies per liter, which is a substantial risk. The risk for influenza virus in Massachusetts is listed as moderate. The Department of Public Health has free COVID tests and masks available at the Bangs Center office, 70 Boltwood Walk, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
For guidance on measures to take to avoid respiratory illness and what to do if you become ill, refer to the Department of Public Health webpage.
Town Urges Caution on Ice. Skate at your own Risk
The Town of Amherst Conservation Department is urging the community to exercise caution on frozen ponds and bodies of water. With shifting temperatures, the safety of the ice cannot be guaranteed and all skating is at your own risk. Stay safe and enjoy the winter season responsibly.
Staff has posted physical signage to this effect at Puffers Pond, Markerts Pond, Owens Pond, and Plum Brook Pond. Please be mindful of these postings and be safe.
