Town Opens Temporary Warming Centers

Town Manager Paul Bockelman and Public Health Director Kiko Malin announced on January 17 that the Town of Amherst will be offering a variety of ways to stay safe and warm during the forecasted extremely cold temperatures. The following locations have been identified as warming centers available to all in need of a safe and warm space.
Warming Center at Bangs Community Center
A warming center will be open in the Glass Room of Bangs Community Center (70 Boltwood Walk) on the following days/times:
- Tuesday, January 21 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
- Wednesday, January 22 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
- Thursday, January 23 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
Staffed by Community Responders for Equity, Safety, and Service (CRESS), this warming center will provide a safe environment, access to hot beverages, and information on available resources. Anyone in need of a warm place during the extreme cold is encouraged to visit.
Public Libraries
All public libraries in town are heated and will be open during their normal operating hours:
- Jones Library (43 Amity Street, Amherst, MA 01002)
- Tuesday from 9:00 am to 8:15 pm
- Wednesday from 9:00 am to 5:15 pm
- Thursday from 9:00 am to 8:15 pm
- Munson Memorial Library (1046 S East Street, Amherst, MA 01002)
- Tuesday from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm
- Wednesday from 2:00 pm to 7:30 pm
- Thursday from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm
- North Amherst Library (8 Montague Road, Amherst, MA 01002)
- Tuesday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm
- Wednesday from 3:30 to 7:30 pm
- Thursday CLOSED
After-Hours Options
In addition to the warming center and libraries, Craig’s Doors will be providing after-hours support. Residents in need of assistance can contact 413-256-0704 for information on available shelter space or resources after standard hours.
The Amherst Police Department is open 24/7. Individuals are welcome to warm up in the lobby during the coldest nights. Space is limited.
If your heating system malfunctions during this extreme cold and your landlord is unresponsive, please contact the Town of Amherst. From 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, call Inspections Services at 413-259-3030. Outside of these hours, call the Police Department’s business line at 413-259-3000.
