If you have driven in Amherst and other communities in our region, you will have seen extensive pothole damage to many of our roads. This damage is caused by snow, rain and the fluctuation in thawing/freezing temperatures that does severe damage to roads.
The Amherst Department of Public Works (DPW) has dedicated multiple crews to address these road conditions, taking advantage of the unusually warm weather this week.
Work began on Monday and will continue through this week as long as favorable weather allows. So far, crews have identified and repaired potholes on West Bay Road, College Street, Sunderland Road, and Belchertown Road. Next, the focus will be on Bridge Street, Shays Street, South East Street, University Drive, and Amity Street.
“With the warm weather upon us, we’re seizing this opportunity to address the pothole situation,” said Town Manager Paul Bockelman. “Our dedicated Public Works crews have been working extensively over the past weeks, mostly at night and on weekends, to ensure our roads are navigable. I thank them for their work and commitment to the Town.”
Superintendent of Public Works Guilford Mooring added, “It is pothole season, and we kindly ask that drivers slow down and follow the rules of the road.”
