Amherst has a timely opportunity for public input and participation with the change of leadership in the Planning Department. Reevaluation opportunities linked to leadership change can be highly productive. Input as well from those who work now and have worked in the Planning Department would also be extremely valuable.
According to our town website, the planning department description describes three functions in some detail.
1. Implementing Planning Initiatives and Regulatory Mechanisms to enhance environmental, economic, and social quality of life.
2. Facilitate the work of the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals, meeting with residents and developers.
3. Oversee grant programs and facilitate the work of many boards and committees,
Residents have a variety of experiences with the Planning Department and could provide valuable input. Some residents have closely followed how the Planning Department has aided economic development initiatives as well as initiatives for social and environmental development; others among us have followed applications before the Planning Board and/or the Zoning Board of Appeals; and many residents have participated in various other boards and committees.
Please join in requesting that the Town Manager and the Town Council facilitate a search process that includes active resident participation.
