Town Manager Seeks Volunteers to Serve on Town Boards, Committees, and Commissions

Town Manager Paul Bockelman seeks volunteers to fill vacancies on town boards, committees, and commissions. Interested residents are encouraged to submit their applications online by Sunday, May 18. Applications received after May 18 will be considered for still-vacant positions. 

“The beauty of our town government is its ability to engage residents in the decision-making process through our various boards and committees,” said Bockelman. “By participating in these volunteer opportunities, residents are not only contributing to the betterment of our community, but they are also helping to create a more responsive and representative government.”  

Boards, Committees, and Commissions 
The Town of Amherst has over 30 boards and committees that play a vital role in supporting and advising the Town government, with each comprised of several resident members. Terms of service are typically three years, although some terms may be shorter. Members can serve for up to two consecutive terms. Members with terms expiring who have served one term may be seeking reappointment. Some multi-member groups may have vacancies available for students enrolled at Amherst Regional High School including the Human Rights Commission and the Community Safety and Social Justice Committee. 

Boards, Committees, and Commissions that have current or anticipated vacancies include: 

  • Affordable Housing Trust – 1 reappointment and 4 anticipated vacancies
  • Board of Health – 1 anticipated vacancy
  • Board of License Commissioners – 1 anticipated vacancy
  • Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Advisory Committee – 1 reappointment and 2 anticipated vacancies
  • Community Preservation Act Committee (CPAC) – 1 anticipated vacancy
  • Community Safety and Social Justice Committee (CSSJC) – 1 anticipated vacancy
  • Conservation Commission – 2 anticipated vacancies
  • Council on Aging – 2 reappointments and 1 anticipated vacancy
  • Cultural Council – 2 reappointments and 2 anticipated vacancies
  • Design Review Board – 3 anticipated vacancies
  • Commission for Persons with Disabilities – 1 reappointment and 2 anticipated vacancies
  • Energy and Climate Action Committee – 1 reappointment and 2 anticipated vacancies
  • Historical Commission – 2 reappointments and 3 anticipated vacancies
  • Human Rights Commission – 3 reappointments and 1 anticipated vacancy
  • Local Historic District Commission – 2 reappointments and 2 anticipated vacancies
  • Personnel Board – 2 anticipated vacancies
  • Public Art Commission – 1 reappointment and 3 anticipated vacancies
  • Residents’ Advisory Committee – 1 anticipated vacancy
  • Transportation Advisory Committee – 1 reappointment and 3 anticipated vacancies

How to Apply 
The Town of Amherst enjoys a long tradition of active, participatory, & professional government. The Town Manager seeks volunteers that reflect the diversity of the community and are passionate about making Amherst a great place to live, work, learn, and grow. 

Residents interested in volunteering to serve on a board, committee, or commission are encouraged to complete the Community Activity Form by May 18. Applications submitted after this date will still be considered for any remaining vacancies.
