PUBLIC HEARING ON PROPOSED CHANGES TO TOWN’S ZONING BYLAW

There will be a public hearing on proposed changes to the town’s zoning bylaw on Monday, July 22, at 6:30 p.m. in the Town Room of Town Hall. The official notice follows:
Zoning Bylaw – Changes mandated by the Amherst Home Rule Charter
To see if the Town will vote to amend the Zoning Bylaw by repealing the Zoning Bylaw in its entirety and adopting a new Zoning Bylaw, including amendments recommended by the Bylaw Review Committee to bring the Zoning Bylaw into conformance with the Amherst Home Rule Charter, as adopted March 27, 2018

I greatly appreciate the detailed reports of the meetings of the Town Council and its committees and want to thank the reporters and bloggers for their efforts. As the new government finds its footing it is clear that my original fear of too much unanimity was unfounded. I am glad of this, although the discussions around committee appointments seem to have generated more heat than light. As for term limits, they have always been treated as guidelines rather than requirements and my own feeling is that they should be requirements with a written policy for requesting exceptions. Experience, once this transitional period is over, should not be a major requirement since it often acts as a set of blinders rather than a set of tools. On all appointed committees, where differences of opinion are known to exist in the community, it is important that appointments reflect them.
